Match Preview : An England goalkeeper getting caught out by a long- range shot at a World Cup is nothing new, so Karen Bardsley joined good company last Monday evening.

Mexico’s Monica Ocampo saw her speculative effort from distance beat the despairing dive of the England No. 1, as all of the good work that Hope Powell’s side had put in until then was undone.

The reward for that earlier positivity had come in the form of Fara Williams’ looping header but, floored by an equaliser which could be attributed to a goalkeeper’s lack of concentration, England eventually had to settle for a 1-1 draw against a side from the Americas in their opening match of the tournament.
“It's definitely a must-win game, three points will set us up nicely going into the [last group] game against Japan,” said Williams, a 27-year-old midfielder for Everton who has 93 caps for her country, scoring 35 goals.

“If you look at all the groups and all the games it's mostly one goal that has won it. Goals will be important, but first of all, getting the three points is the most important and if it's 1-0 to us then we will take that.”

Playing against a New Zealand team which recorded an 8-0 semi-final victory and an 11-0 final win during their qualifying tournament, then the prospect of a one-goal margin of victory should surely see England snap several hands off.

“I don't think there is a team as good as New Zealand for the work-rate they put in for 90 minutes,” continued Williams.

“They are going to do that on Friday and it will make it difficult for us.”

With, as Williams states, this match inserted firmly into the ‘must-win’ column for England, Powell may be tempted into making changes, meaning that every one of the 21-strong squad will need to be ready, especially with Williams and skipper Faye White –
“I struggled in the last 10 minutes which was expected," continued Williams. “I'm just glad I made it through the 90 minutes.”

England will be too, and will be looking for another strong performance from their all-action midfielder, as well as hoping that Eni Aluko can take any chances that fall her way, unlike on Monday.
A win would inject some new hope into Powell’s side, and allow them to get over the disappointment of Mexico should they still be feeling it.

Regardless of their big wins in qualifying, New Zealand are facing tougher opposition here, and England can earn the victory that they so crave – a win that would go a long way towards qualification for the latter stages.

As far as they are concerned, then the comparisons with recent English World Cups will hopefully end there.

preview Match : With two minutes remaining in their opening European Championship game, the future looked bleak for coach Stuart Pearce and his England under-21's team.

A fortuitous Danny Welbeck goal later - he was offside when he earned a point against Spain - and the tournament has a completely different complexion for Pearce's side.

Pearce will tell his youngsters to show the defensive resolve they displayed against the Spanish but also try to impose their own game more effectively.

Ukraine are considered the outsiders of the four Group B teams but Pearce will be wary of a squad containing six full internationals that defeated Netherlands in a play-off to reach the finals.

After losing to Czech Republic in their first game of the finals, Ukraine need to get something from the game. The fact that the Czechs and Spain play earlier in the day means it could be a tense evening with both teams knowing what they need from the game.

Pearce's team face the highly-fancied Czechs in their last game of the group stage and will be desperate to head into that match with a win under their belt.

Strategy: England will not pass it like Spain but they will see more of the ball this time and need to use it wisely. They will attack down the flanks with full backs overlapping and Daniel Sturridge will lead their attack...

Capello says Rooney is fit (AFP) Sunday 27 June 2010 Capello says Rooney is fit

Fabio Capello has reassured England fans that striker Wayne Rooney is fit and strong enough to last 120 minutes if needed against Germany in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup™.
Manchester United striker Rooney has been criticised for below-par performances in the tournament so far and caused further anxiety when he was substituted against Slovenia in England's final group game because of an ankle problem. He has recovered well since then, with Joe Cole claiming his team-mate has been back to his very best on the training field, and Capello expects a big performance from Rooney in Sunday's last-16 clash with Germany in Bloemfontein.
When asked if the striker was fit enough to last not just 90 minutes but also extra-time if necessary the England manager was unequivocal, saying: "He's OK, no problems. He is perfect. It was just a knock." That one phrase will come as a huge boost to England because Rooney has always been regarded as the player to make his country tick and he has been under intense scrutiny in South Africa.
He has failed to score in the tournament so far and was involved in controversy when he appeared to criticise fans for booing their team off the pitch following a goalless draw against Algeria. However it appears he has been swiftly forgiven by both fans and manager, enjoying chants of 'Rooooney' during England's victory over Slovenia as well as backing from Capello.
He [Rooney] is perfect. It was just a knock.
Fabio Capello, England coach
"I saw the group games on DVD and I was happy with Rooney's performances," the Italian said. "He has been playing well. The World Cup is not an easy game to play and I'm happy with the performance of Rooney. I hope on Sunday he will play the way he did against Slovenia. And I hope that he will score."
The pressure on Rooney against Germany will be all the more intense because of the rivalry between the two countries. England lost on penalties to the Germans in the semi-finals of Italia 90 and UEFA EURO 96 but can also look back on victories in EURO 2000 and of course the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final. But Capello is anxious not to build the hype. "To go forward you have to beat all the teams," he said. "Germany is one of those teams, not more. I respect Germany but I think also Germany respects us."
England captain Steven Gerrard, who scored in England's opening game against the United States, believes his revitalised team will take another step forward against the Germans after having made such a slow start to their campaign. "These are the games when you need to stand up and be counted. It's the stage that growing up you want to be playing at," he said.
"There could be a moment in the game at any time that could come to define a player's career. You look forward to it, it's a fantastic game to play in and everyone is excited. The plan as captain is to lead this team as far as I can. Yes, I got the captaincy under difficult circumstances but it's my responsibility now and I'm enjoying it. I would love nothing better than to win this game and take the team into the quarter-finals."

Unlikely faces in England squad (PA) Tuesday 11 May 2010

Jamie Carragher and Ledley King are the shock call-ups to England's provisional 30-man FIFA World Cup™ squad, but there is no place for Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves.
Neither Carragher nor King has played a game for the Three Lions under Capello, although the Tottenham Hotspur man was called into the squad for a double header against Slovakia and the Ukraine last year, only to be ditched a couple of days later on fitness grounds.
However, with doubts over Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, and Wes Brown and Joleon Lescott ruled out through injury, Capello has talked Carragher out of retirement and will have a look at the Liverpool man, plus King, who has just played four games in 15 days, before finalising his 23-man squad for South Africa.
However, with Gareth Barry selected, despite on-going concerns over the ankle injury he suffered during Manchester City's defeat to Tottenham last week, Capello has decided not to call on Hargreaves, as had been predicted even though the midfielder has played only one minute of senior football since October 2008.
Instead, West Ham's Scott Parker is included in a midfield also containing Joe Cole, who has not been involved since the sensational win over Croatia in September 2008.
Manchester City's Adam Johnson is one of two uncapped players in Capello's squad, the other being Tottenham defender Michael Dawson.
Only three goalkeepers - David James, Robert Green and Joe Hart - have been named, while attempts to talk Wayne Bridge out of making himself unavailable have been less successful than Capello's efforts with Carragher.
Amongst the players who were mentioned as candidates but did not receive a call were Gary Neville, who was an outside bet anyway, Stewart Downing and Carlton Cole.
In addition, Bobby Zamora has failed to secure a place amongst the final 30 despite his outstanding contribution to Fulham's excellent season. Instead, Darren Bent has been handed a place despite his ineffective performance against Brazil last November.
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill will be disappointed there are no spots for Downing, Gabriel Agbonlahor or Ashley Young, even if Stephen Warnock will travel along with James Milner.
Missing out on today's squad does not necessarily end all hope of reaching the World Cup. Once his final 23-man party is named after the second of two forthcoming friendlies, against Mexico on 24 May at Wembley and Japan in Graz six days later, Capello can still make changes due to injury and those replacements do not have to come out of the original 30.
England's provisional squad:
Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green.
Defenders: Leighton Baines, Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock.
Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Forwards: Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney. (fifa.com)

Players Who Really Shouldn't Be At the 2010 World Cup...But Just Might

Players Who Really Shouldn't Be At the 2010 World Cup...But Just Might
You'll hear ex-players, with their cushy jobs as 'state-the-bloody-obvious' media pundits, bang on and on about needing experienced players in national squads who know what to do when the team is up against it.

And, I concede, it's a fair point. However, what often happens is that managers end up playing safe and picking players that are way past their prime. I expect this World Cup Finals to be no different, and here a few of the players that may end up in South Africa this summer, but really shouldn't be anywhere near the place.

1: Vincenzo Iaquinta (Italy)

Agreed, Iaquinta has scored plenty of goals in a decade long career in Serie A and seems to have had something of a rennaisance at Juve under Claudio Ranieri and Ciro Ferrara. This presumably is why Marcelo Lippi recalled Iaquinta to the Italy squad for the 2010 qualifying campaign.

The thing is, though, he's just not world class. He's scored only 5 goals in 35 international appearances and 2 of those were in a friendly against New Zealand.

At the 2006 World Cup, he got only one goal in five matches and looked out of his depth. Lippi really should say 'thanks, but no thanks' to Iaquinta.

2: Martin Palermo (Argentina)

Argentina have a fine array of attacking talent : Messi, Tevez, Aguero, Milito, Higuain. The names just roll off the tongue.

They also have Martin Palermo. You might remember that Palermo scored the goal that took Argentina through to the World Cup Finals and saved manager Diego Maradona' job.

What you probably don't know is that Palermo is 36 and, until his recent recall to the national team, hadn't played for Argentina in 10 years. The reason for that is: he's not a great player as his time in Spain showed and there are loads of others ahead of him in the queue.

However, who knows what goes through the mind of Maradona? And he did score 'that' goal.

3: Mark Viduka (Australia)

I suspect that Mark Viduka is sitting on a beach in Oz at this very moment, sipping a lager and counting his money. What he definitely isn't doing is playing football, as the 32 year old is currently without a club.

When he could be bothered, Viduka was a great centre forward, but mainly he couldn't be bothered. He couldn't even be bothered to play for Australia when specifically asked by manager Pim Verbeek.

So, it's very, very unlikely that Viduka will get anywhere near the 2010 World Cup, right? Well, answer me this question. Name me three forwards currently in the Australian national squad? No? OK, name me one?

You see my point. Currently, Australia doesn't have a single striker that is known outside of Australia itself. So, if Viduka does decide to play a little soccer again, it's just a very small possibility that the lazy bugger will be recalled for the 2010 World Cup Finals.

4: David James (England)

At the other end of the likelihood spectrum we have David James, currently at Portsmouth and still - when fit - England's number one goalkeeper.

How this state of affairs came to pass is a mystery to me. England used to churn out top class 'keepers like a production line : Banks, Shilton, Clemence, Seaman. There were loads.

Now, they've got a 'keeper whose nickname is 'calamity' and who still, despite a significant improvement in his overall game, makes stupid mistakes on a regular basis.

In an ideal world, there is no way David James should be playing at the World Cup Finals. Unfortunately, unless Joe Hart makes an undeniable case for himself in forthcoming friendlies, he probably will be.
